Event: University of Winchester Musical Theatre - Music and Lyrics - 7.30pm - the University of Winchester Musical Theatre students take to the stage, in a one night only event: Music and Lyrics. Songs in musicals function in various ways and can express a range of emotions for the characters that sing them. Whether moments of joy, anger or despair, and everything in between, musicals allow characters to paint their emotions on a variety of canvases. In a stripped-back, concert setting, students will perform a range of songs drawn from across the musical theatre repertoire, illustrating that musicals can be so much more than frivolous entertainment.

The story centres on Rita O’Grady, a working-class woman who becomes an unlikely leader in the fight for gender equality. Rita and her female co-workers at the Ford factory are unfairly classified as unskilled labourers, receiving lower wages than their male counterparts. Frustrated by the injustice, Rita takes a stand and leads her fellow women in a strike that eventually garners national attention. As the girls’ inspiring journey gets bigger than anyone could have imagined, the pressure is too much for some, but can Rita keep up the fight and the happy home she’s worked so hard for? This is a tale of empowerment, solidarity, and the triumph of justice in the face of adversity.
